Saturday, 5/31. Nairobi to Kilimanjaro.

John loans me his camera for my Tanzanian safari trek and three weeks in Rwanda. He’s more than generous; I decline his offer of binoculars but he insists. At the Nairobi airport my suitcase is overweight by 3 kilos so I have to transfer two boxes of Clif bars onto my carry-on. I walk onto the tarmac to board the plane and sit next to a 19-year-old, Asian engineering student from Edmonton. He’s en route to a summer volunteer gig at a Tanzanian orphanage. After landing, a taxi takes me from Kilimanjaro airport to Arusha, 35 minutes away, where most safari treks originate. I spend the night under mosquito net at the Outpost Lodge.
